THE TIME A HALF MARATHON JUST SLIPPED MY MIND

It occurred to me on Tuesday that I am running a half marathon this weekend. I say “it occurred to me” because I had literally forgotten, or at least had confused the dates in mind or something. Even though I technically “knew” the Pocatello Marathon weekend is Labor Day weekend, apparently I did not have a real grip on when Labor Day Weekend actually is. Has that ever happened to you? In my mind, I was all “Oh, I’m running a half marathon in September,” and my brain apparently translated that to “I am running a half marathon on the last possible day of September.” In actuality, I am running a half marathon on September 3. That’s tomorrow.

GAH

As you read this, I’m on my way to Pocatello, Idaho with two of my favorite people – Patty and Kate! For those of you who don’t know, I met both Patty and Kate while running races. Kate and I met at the Jacksonville Bank Marathon all the way back in 2011 (crazy!) when we were both wearing Marathon Maniacs shirts. We came to find out that we had qualified for the Maniacs on the exact same day! We’ve been friends ever since and have traveled to probably 20 marathons together.

I met Patty at the Little Rock Marathon about three months later in March, 2012. Again, she was wearing a Maniacs shirt and seemed to be leading a group of people who were all running a similar pace to me, so I stuck with them as long as I could! Patty is one of my best friends and like a second mom to me – I even lived with her and her family in Tulsa for a few months during the summer of 2014! We try to get together at least a few times a year and already went to Cincinnati together for the Flying Pig Marathon this year.

One of my favorite pictures ever! Patty, me and Kate at the New Hampshire Marathon in 2012

We all have matching shirts for this race, too, so stay tuned!

Anyway, I guess I thought I had more time to pick my training back up than I actually did. I have been having some pretty significant health issues lately that I have not touched on here, but I will when I get my test results back. To make a long story short, I’ve been having a lot of problems with my digestive system (as usual) and am extremely run down and exhausted. I haven’t been left with much energy or motivation to run, and I think in the back of my mind I thought I would feel better soon enough and catch up with my training. That is clearly not even close to what has happened.

Running when your digestive system is jacked up is definitely something an idiot would do. Then again, so is running a half marathon you haven’t trained for, so I’m doing really well.

As much as I was hoping this would be a goal race for me, that is clearly not on the table.  While I do hope that one of those is in my near future, it won’t be Pocatello. I have no idea what I’ll be able to do, but I want to have fun and of course meet some new people along the way. I guess we’ll see what happens!

Me every time I get to the starting line of a race.

I’ve heard the Pocatello course is absolutely beautiful, so I’m going to plan on posting live updates on Instagram throughout the race! Follow me here (or search for @thetrexrunner) and run along with me! Here’s to state #39!
