Many people dream of finding their passion and using it to do good in the world, but that can be harder than it looks. Finding your passion is hard enough on its own sometimes, but using it to make a difference is something else entirely! For Schneblies ® founder Susie Sheftel (and me, too!), passion has been the easy part. As a lifelong artist, creating things is in her blood. It wasn’t until a trip to a fitness spa in Mexico, though, that she learned how to use art to make a difference. Now, y’all know I don’t do many product reviews, sponsored posts, or giveaways – at least not without a good reason. But when a company has a mission that I believe in and a product that I like, I want to pass the word along to you! I was delighted when Schneblies ® reached out to me to talk about their adorable jewelry and work in conservation advocacy. I’ve got a GREAT giveaway at the bottom of this post, but first, take a second to learn about this adorable little guy and all the good he is doing in the world!
“I remember going to camp as a kid and being fascinated by these little toads,” she said. “They had so much detail despite their small size, and that stuck with me for years. When I was visiting a fitness spa in Mexico in the early 2000s, I found myself painting a frog-like design on a river rock. I filled it with bright colors and the other people in the studio told me I should start painting more of them when I got home and sell them.” Sparked by the enthusiasm other people had for her design, Susie went home and started painting. She began to research more about frogs and learned that they are one of the fastest-disappearing species on earth, particularly in the Amazon.
“They’re an indicator species,” Susie says. “Because they have such thin skin, they can absorb pollution from all different areas, and small amounts affect them first.” Realizing that the actions we take each day directly affect frogs in an immediate and noticeable way, Susie decided to use her new creation for good. “I wanted to create something emblematic that would inspire people to do the right thing,” she says. “I hope that every time people look at the design, they are inspired to take care of the planet – by recycling, cleaning up the environment, or whatever else they can do to help. I wanted to give people a tangible way of remembering to do the right thing, and what better way to do that than by wearing jewelry that will remind you every time you see it?”
That brings us to Schneblie®, Susie’s famous frog. Schneblie® got his name from one of the first settlers of Sedona, Arizona. Susie couldn’t believe that one of the founding settlers of such a beautiful, profound place had a name that sounded so silly. She remembered it for 10 years before founding her company, and thought the symbolism of preserving a place as beautiful as Sedona was perfect. Her frogs have been called Schneblies® ever since!
Because Susie has an alternate primary source of income, she is able to donate 15% of the sales from Schneblies® to conservation organizations. Presently, Susie is donating her proceeds to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton, Florida. “I’m passionate about clean water and preserving oceans, rivers, and streams,” she says. “I wanted to put my money where my mouth is. I’m hoping to add on additional charity partners in the future so that people can choose where they’d like their dollars to go. There are so many places on earth that need our help!”
As you might have guessed, Susie is passionate about spending time out doors and staying active while enjoying Earth’s beauty. At 64 years young, she leads an active lifestyle that includes cycling, hiking, walking, and swimming. When she’s not outside, you can find her on the road! Susie loves to travel and just returned from Mexico – one of her favorite places! She’ll be headed to Alaska this summer, and don’t worry – I already warned her about the mosquitoes!
If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I don’t wear bold jewelry very often. When I first got the offer to work with Susie, I initially hesitated before seeing the jewelry because I wasn’t sure it was a great fit. Then I saw the size and discreet colors of the charms (they come in brass, gold, or silver) and knew it was something I would wear. The size and discreet colors are part of what I love about Schneblies®! Once I saw how seamlessly it fit into my normal wardrobe and other jewelry, I was convinced. Although I wasn’t sure how the black strand would look against my (uber-pale) skin at first, I actually really like it. Now, it’s a great conversation starter about a cause I’m passionate about and a cute new addition to my jewelry collection!
